Walkerton will host a special cycling event on Sunday, August 24 as Pedal for Hospice invites riders to take in the beauty of Bruce and Grey Counties while raising funds for the future Saugeen Hospice.
The event offers two routes, 16 kilometres or 40 kilometres, starting at the Bruce Power Regional Soccer Park Pavilion, right beside the hospice’s planned site in Eastridge Park. Riders will travel a mix of scenic gravel and paved roads, with all ages and skill levels welcome.
"Pedalling for Saugeen Hospice is a fun, fully supported community bike ride through the scenic Bruce County countryside," said spokesman Kevin Kieffer. "So grab some family and friends, get out your bikes and join us for a great cause."
There is no minimum donation required, but organizers encourage participants to set a fundraising goal of $100 per person. Donations of $20 or more are eligible for a tax receipt.
Saugeen Hospice is a not-for-profit community corporation planning a six-bed facility to provide free, compassionate end-of-life care for residents of South Bruce, Brockton, Hanover, Arran-Elderslie, West Grey, Minto, and surrounding areas. Over $6 million has already been raised, and the Municipality of Brockton has donated three acres of land for the project.
"Our communities in South Bruce Grey need a hospice, and our hospice needs you," Kieffer pointed out. "Let's ride together for the future Saugeen Hospice and have fun doing it."
Helmets are mandatory, and riders are encouraged to bring water bottles, bike lights, cellphones, and wear high-visibility clothing.
