Donations needed for severely injured, abandoned kitten's life-saving surgery

The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth has issued an urgent appeal for donations as it works to save the life of a six-week-old kitten abandoned at the side of the road near Mitchell.

The tiny kitten, now named Penny, was found with one of her front legs missing from the elbow down and the bone above broken. She is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday to remove the remaining part of the leg with the broken bone and damaged tissue.

Humane society officials have said due to Penny's small size the surgery will be especially delicate and her medical and care costs could reach as high as $6,000. That estimated cost includes the leg surgery, a future spay surgery, and medication.

“Penny came to us with this severe injury, and we knew we had to give her the second chance she deserves,” Dr. Meghan Wallace, the local humane society's veterinarian, said in a statement. “This surgery is essential to relieve her pain and give her the chance to grow up as a happy, healthy cat.”

Penny is currently in foster care where despite her devastating injury she has been said to be playful, energetic, and incredibly affectionate.

"She’s the cuddliest kitten I’ve ever met," said Humane Society Animal Care Attendant Jill Andress.

One-time donations toward Penny's surgery and care can be made through the CanadaHelps.org.
