'Fabulous, exciting feeling': Stratford man wins $50K

Dinner and a Detroit Red Wings game are in the cards for a Stratford man who recently won a $50,000 lottery prize

Richard Smith, a retired industrial engineer, claimed the five figure pot in the August 14 WINTARIO50 draw. He said that, while he plays the lottery regularly, he decided to pick up a WINTARIO ticket out of the blue.

“I checked my ticket on the OLG app and said, ‘I think I just won $50,000,’” Smith said while picking up his winnings at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. "I’ve been congratulated by so many people. It’s been such a fabulous, exciting feeling.”

The father of three said he is still contemplating how to spend the money, but does plan to have a "nice" dinner as well as taking in a ball game.

“I’m also excited to go see the Detroit Red Wings," said Smith. "This has been quite an adventure."

The winning ticket was purchased at Zehrs on Ontario Street in Stratford.
