Hanover Police are warning residents to be on guard after a resident was defrauded of approximately $117,000 in an online romance scam that began in 2021.
Hanover's Police Chief stated that cases like this are becoming increasingly frequent, with total losses reported in the hundreds of thousands of dollars every year. Many more incidents are believed to go unreported, making the true scale of the problem even larger.
Romance scams typically begin online through dating platforms or social media. Fraudsters pose as potential romantic partners, gradually building emotional connections with their victims before inventing false emergencies or expenses—such as medical bills, travel costs, or business opportunities—and requesting money.
“These scams are deeply manipulative and emotionally damaging,” said Chief Chris Knoll. “We want to remind residents that no legitimate relationship should require secrecy or repeated financial support. Public education, awareness and prevention remain a key strategy to prevent victimization.”
Police said investigating these crimes is difficult, since many of the perpetrators are located offshore and outside Canadian jurisdiction. Still, Hanover Police are working to track those responsible and prevent further victimization.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious online interactions to police.
