Police detachments across the province are preaching cyber safety during Cyber Security Awareness Month in October.
The Huron County OPP are one of many policing branches working alongside the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) to raise awareness about online and telephone scams, as well as safety measures to ensure you don't become a victim of fraud.
The public is encouraged to bring all electronic devices up to speed, and to learn different ways to protect yourself. This is because fraudsters can target weaknesses in old operating systems browsers, and apps to steal personal information.
Ways to protect yourself include:
• Turning on automatic updates
• Updating routers and smart devices to secure your home network
• Using strong and unique passwords
• Using Multi-Factor Authentication on accounts
• Limiting the information stored on devices (e.g., SIN, government ID's, tax documents) unless necessary
• Monitoring your accounts and credit reports regularly for unfamiliar transactions or credit inquiries
• Visiting GetCyberSafe for more information on securing your devices
Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre's online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. If not a victim, you should still report the incident to the CAFC.
