Federal funding supports 'Weather-Ready Wellington' climate plan

Wellington County is getting $105,000 in federal funding to develop Weather-Ready Wellington, a new climate adaptation plan aimed at protecting local infrastructure and strengthening community resilience.

The funding, announced through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund, is part of a $5.2-million federal investment shared among 70 municipalities across Canada.

Warden Chris White says the initiative builds on the County’s existing Future Focused climate plan, which targets net-zero emissions by 2050. The new plan will focus on adapting to rising temperatures, stronger storms, and other local climate impacts.

County Climate Change and Sustainability Manager Karen Chisholme says the plan will assess risks and develop strategies specific to Wellington’s rural and agricultural needs, with public engagement opportunities set for 2026.
