Kincardine expands accessible transportation services

Residents of Kincardine who need accessible transportation will soon have more options, as Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit and the Municipality of Kincardine prepare to roll out expanded transit service starting in mid-March.

The initiative is designed to assist people who are unable to drive because of physical or cognitive disabilities, giving them greater access to essential services and opportunities to remain active in the community. The program will help riders travel to a range of destinations, including medical appointments, workplaces, schools, shopping trips, social gatherings, and community activities.

Under the expanded schedule, trips will be available Monday through Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. until midnight, as well as Sundays between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Transportation will be provided using an accessible vehicle that can carry up to nine passengers. The vehicle is fitted with a hydraulic lift to accommodate wheelchair users and assist passengers who require extra support when boarding.

Trip costs will be calculated at $2.50 per kilometre, with a minimum one-way fare of $12. Riders who require assistance may travel with a support person at no additional charge.

“This service reflects our commitment to building a more inclusive and accessible community,” said Mayor Kenneth Craig. “By working with SMART, we’re helping remove barriers and improve quality of life for residents.”

The service will operate as a pilot project through March 2027. During that time, the municipality and SMART will track ridership and gather feedback to determine how the program is being used and what transportation needs exist in the community.

Anyone wishing to use the service must first complete a client registration form and provide proof of residency when booking a ride. Once registered, trips can be scheduled by calling 226-230-2341.
