Port Elgin residents can learn more about Wellington Street reconstruction

Port Elgin residents are being invited to learn more about the upcoming Wellington Street reconstruction project at a pre-construction meeting scheduled for March 24.

The session will run from 4 to 6 p.m. and will take place on site at the east side of the Wellington Street and Green Street intersection. The meeting will give community members an opportunity to meet the contractor carrying out the work, ask questions, and better understand what to expect before construction gets underway.

The Town of Saugeen Shores said the project itself is set to begin in early April, when crews mobilize to start reconstruction along Wellington Street between Gustavus and Elgin streets. The work will include replacing the sanitary sewer and watermain, installing new storm drainage and infiltration systems, rebuilding the road base and asphalt, and adding a new sidewalk to improve accessibility in the area.

Construction is expected to take approximately three months to complete, depending on weather conditions. Work will typically take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with no activity planned outside of daylight hours or during statutory holidays. A detailed construction schedule will be maintained by the contractor, outlining key milestones and any changes as the project progresses.

While there will be impacts during construction, officials say efforts will be made to maintain local traffic flow wherever possible. Pedestrian access will remain open at all times, although some areas may be temporarily enclosed with safety fencing or barriers to ensure public safety while allowing safe passage. Emergency services, including police, fire, and medical responders, will continue to have full access throughout the project, and detours will be put in place as needed to guide traffic around work zones.

Due to space limitations, the pre-construction meeting will be held in person only, with no virtual attendance option available. Residents who are unable to attend are encouraged to submit questions by email, with staff working alongside the contractor to provide responses in advance.

Ongoing updates about the Wellington Street reconstruction will be shared through the Town’s project page at engage.saugeenshores.ca/2026Roads, where residents can follow progress and stay informed throughout the duration of the work.
