Flooding prompts State of Emergency on Manitoulin Island

A state of emergency has been declared in the Municipality of Central Manitoulin as severe flooding impacts communities across Manitoulin Island.

Municipal officials say the declaration took effect at 11:13 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2026, "due to extreme flooding in parts of the municipality."

They say "rapid snowmelt combined with significant rainfall has caused water levels to rise quickly," creating hazardous conditions in several areas.

Residents are being urged to stay clear of impacted areas, with the municipality advising people to "avoid all flooded roads and areas if possible," and to "use extreme caution if necessary travel is required."

The warning comes as the Ontario Provincial Police report widespread flooding and washouts across the island. The Manitoulin OPP say conditions include flooding around Mindemoya, Kagawong, and Evansville, along with road washouts on stretches of Highway 6 between Little Current and Espanola.

Several roads have already been closed, with more expected as conditions worsen.
