No residents were injured in a fire at a seniors complex in Tobermory on Tuesday night.
Around 7:45 p.m., fire crews responded to a fire at the Bradley H. Davis Senior Apartments along Hwy 6. The road was closed for several hours as a result.
Members of the Tobermory, Lion's Head, Wiarton, Arran-Elderslie, and Inter Township Fire Stations were all on scene, with about 30 firefighters in total.
Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire Chief Jack Burt said the reason crews were able to respond so quickly was thanks to the presence of alarms.
"This fire is a testament to having working smoke alarms in your home," he said. "That early detection and the early detection from the fire alarm system in the building literally saved lives last night."
The complex was evacuated and residents were taken to the nearby community centre for temporary shelter. No residents reported injuries, but two firefighters were treated on scene.
Bruce County has yet to respond to questions about how long residents can expect to be displaced.
Burt said while they were able to stop the fire from spreading, smoke damage will delay the return of people to their homes.
"The fire damage is mostly contained to one unit. We have significant water damage to another unit, but we did get smoke travelling throughout the entire complex," said Burt. "The fire did get up into the attic space, but aggressive firefighting techniques were able to mitigate that... there will have to remidiation method for the building before residents can get back in."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
