With summer road repair work in full swing, Owen Sound police will be making sure drivers are using extra caution when passing through construction zones.
The police service has announced it will be conducting proactive traffic enforcement in those areas throughout the city. Officers will be on the look out for speeders, aggressive drivers, and distracted drivers.
"Construction areas present unique hazards for workers who are often positioned only a short distance from moving traffic," police said in a statement. "Speeding, distracted driving, and aggressive driving behaviours significantly increase the risk of serious injury or death for both workers and motorists."
Police added that construction zones require increased attention due to the changing road conditions, lane reductions, and the presence of heavy equipment and workers.
When driving on roads under construction, drivers should obey all posted speed limits and temporary construction zone signage, watch for workers, equipment and changing traffic patterns, leave extra space between vehicles, allow extra time to get through the construction area, and avoid electronic distractions.
Drivers found in violation of traffic laws will be issued fines and other penalties under the Highway Traffic Act, police said.
