Perth County OPP are reminding residents that e-scooters are prohibited in Perth County.
As the use of e-bikes and e-scooters continues to grow in popularity, police are reminding everyone that currently, e-scooters are not permitted to be used on county roads and sidewalks.
"The operation of e-scooters on streets and sidewalks throughout Ontario are regulated by municipal and city by-laws. Currently there are no by-laws in Perth County allowing the usage of e-scooters, therefor their operation is prohibited," Perth County OPP stated in a media release.
Operators of e-scooters in Perth County may be subject to fines under the Highway Traffic Act and Municipal by-laws. However, e-bikes are currently allowed, but can not be ridden on sidewalks. Riders must have operable pedals on the bike, wear a helmet, and be at least 16-years-old, among other rules.
Those include requiring riders to have e-bikes that:
-Have an electric motor rated at no more than 500 watts
-Have a maximum assisted speed of 32 km/h
-Weigh no more than 120 kg, including the battery
-Be equipped with two independent braking systems
-Have the battery and motor securely fastened to the frame
-Have all electrical terminals properly insulated
