Grey County's says capacity is increasing for its short-term shelter program ahead of winter, offering more motel rooms to those in need.
The County says on average, 47 motel rooms are available per night in the winter. That includes a County-owned former motel in Owen Sound, as well as other motels across the region.
Last year, Grey County provided 9,324 nights of short-term housing to 366 unique adults. There were also 59 youth supported by the program.
"Grey County winters can be harsh, especially for those without a safe place to stay," said Anne Marie Shaw, Director of Community Services in a release. "The short-term shelter program provides an important option for individuals and families who need somewhere safe, warm and welcoming to turn."
Along with providing safe shelter, the County has Housing Case Coordinators work with participants accessing the program to connect them with services, identify housing plans, and explore options for permanent housing.
According to the County, 126 households moved from the program into self-contained accommodations last year.
