Town of Minto purchases land for affordable housing, invites public to housing session

The Town of Minto has purchased a property in downtown Palmerston to try and address affordable and attainable housing needs in the area.

The property at 212 Main Street West in Palmerston includes seven residential apartments and a trio of commercial spaces. This purchase was funded through the Wellington County Housing Development Fund.

The town says the goal is to have the apartments ready in the first quarter of 2027, with the commercial spaces also presenting opportunities to drive downtown commerce.

"This is an opportunity for the Town to address a real community need while making better use of an existing downtown property," said Mayor Dave Turton. "Attainable/ Affordable housing is important to the future of Minto. This project will help provide housing options for residents while also supporting a vibrant downtown Palmerston."

Additionally, council is inviting Minto residents to attend two upcoming community discussions on affordable and attainable housing. They will both be held on November 12, with the first at the Palmerston Lions Clubhouse from 3-4:30 p.m. The second will be that evening at the Harriston Train Station from 6-7:30 p.m.

The Town has selected Grapl Inc., through a Request for Expressions of Interest process, to explore potential housing opportunities and assess local housing needs. Residents will have opportunities to offer opinions and ideas on housing needs in the area. The sessions are open to anyone.

"We know that housing needs are changing, and finding options that people can afford and that meet their needs is important to the future of our community," added Mayor Turton. "These discussions are an opportunity for residents to share their experiences and help us better understand what types of housing are needed in Minto."
