Local Teams Shine In Detroit Invitational

A pair of girls hockey teams from the region found themselves in the final of the 2104 Detroit Girls World Hockey Invitational over the weekend.

The Walkerton Capitals Lower Lakes Midgets lost 1-0 to Clearview. The Saugeen Maitland Intermediate Girls 'A' team beat Buffalo 2-0 in their final.

Walkerton's run started by beating a team from Colorado 6-0 and followed up with a 5-0 win over Durham West and 5-1 over Saugeen Maitland. In the quarter finals they beat Brampton in the quarter finals and Clarington in the semis. The close final game with only one goal sends the girls back home in second place.

The Intermediate Lightning dominated their opposition. Winning all five games they played, outscoring opponents 20 to 2. Their semi final result brought some early attention as they beat the top ranked American team, Armstrong, 4-1. In the final they beat Buffalo by a 2-0 score.

Saugeen Maitland goaltender Amanda Gans was the tournament MVP. Allowing only two goals in five games.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
