Fergus Native Givens Takes Fun Stock Championship In Varney

Another racing season has come to an end at Varney Speedway, and Fergus native Phil Givens took home the Fun Stock Championship for the year.

Givens says it feels great to be champion.

"It was a good year all around, 5 wins this year. It's a real accomplishment to be the champion. We worked really hard on the car this year, and it just goes to show it's won in the preparation you have for each race."

Givens stormed to the Fun Stock crown with 5 wins and 16 overall top 5's in 18 starts. He says his biggest challenge was making sure he stayed patient on the track, especially in the late stages of the year.

"Staying patient was a big key for me, especially later on. Just making sure we didn't run into mechanical problems, or that I put myself in trouble spots on the track. Varney is a bowl and has steep corner banks, and is really fast, so staying patient out there was key."

Givens says he may try another division going forward, but thinks he has another great shot at Fun Stock next year, too.
