Walkerton Use Big 3rd To Hammer Hanover

The Walkerton Hawks are off to a winning start.

They used a lopsided 3rd period to beat the Hanover Barons 6-2 on home ice in the Western Junior C season opener. Head Coach Bill Brown says despite the win there are some things to improve.

"I thought we were a bit sloppy in the neutral zone tonight, and thought there were too many guys chasing the puck at times. But we have a great skating team and started to use our speed better through the middle, but setting up our coverage in the neutral zone is something we need to improve."

Brown says that special teams were a key focus.

"We have two great power-play units, and I thought we were really composed on the PK. We feel we have good special teams and can move the puck well, so that is a strength we can use going forward."

The Hawks got 2 power play goals and were perfect on the penalty kill against the Barons. The Hawks entered the 3rd only up 3-2, and did a lot of damage in the final frame scoring their final 3 to ice the first win of the season.
