Local mental health advocate Kendra Fisher is hosting two workshops with her #MentallyFit campaign this month.
Fisher says that mental health needs to be taken more seriously in Midwestern Ontario, and she explained the main purpose of the two upcoming events for Grey and Bruce.
"The way the events are going to be planned really is one, to kind of introduce people to all the different service providers n the area, as well as help those service providers learn how they can be primary resources for people living with mental illness."
The first event is Saturday November 17th from 10 am until 4 pm at the Saugeen District Secondary School in Port Elgin. The second event is Sunday November 18th from 10 am until 4 pm at the Owen Sound District Secondary School. Admission is free.
"In addition to the activities, I will be sharing my story and we will reveal and launch the #MentallyFit Community Action Plan, just so everyone knows where we’re at and how we plan on kind of spreading this infrastructure throughout the communities and how people need to get involved to make it work."
Despite more awareness and events like the Bell Let’s Talk Day, Fisher says mental health still isn’t strongly addressed in Midwestern Ontario.
"Right now when you’re dealing with mental illness, you’re dealing with, I mean I don’t want to say a failing infrastructure, but we just don’t have a strategy in place nationally, provincially, municipally that provides enough resources or support for the volume of people that are dealing with mental illness."
