Patriots hold off late Mitchell charge

In the PJHL, Mount Forest doubled Mitchell 4-2 even though the Hawks outshot the Patriots 44-33 in the game.

The Patriots built up a 2-0 lead on goals by Ryley Cribbin and Jack Birkett in the first period. They were just over three minutes apart.

Mitchell was able to cut the lead in half when Ethan Hill scored on the power play at 11:26 of the second period. But Cribbin scored his second goal of the game, this time on the power play, with 52 seconds left in the period to give Mount Forest their two goal lead back.

Mitchell pulled to within one goal midway through the third courtesy of Tanner Hertel but a late empty net goal sealed the win for Mount Forest. Jack Birkett scored that one, his second of the game.

Gleb Poliakav stopped 42 shots for the win in the Mount Forest crease. Seth Monkhouse stopped 29 shots for Mitchell.

The win puts Mount Forest just a point behind Wingham for first in the PJHL. The Patriots are in Walkerton Friday night while Wingham hosts Goderich.

Mitchell is trailing Kincardine by a point for the third spot. The Hawks host Wingham on Saturday while Kincardine is in Mount Forest that same night.
