Cambridge wins Cherrey Cup

The Cambridge Redhawks are the Cherrey Cup champions after beating Elmira 4-1 Thursday night and clinched the Midwest Conference Final in five games.

Cambridge got the early start thanks to a Max Macerollo goal just 29 seconds into the game.

Elmira would tie it at 5:59 courtesy of Adam Grein. But that would be Elmira's only goal of the night.

Cambridge took the lead in the second period and then added the insurance goal and an empty net goal in the third.

The Redhawks finished second behind Elmira in the regular season standings, although only three points separated the two teams. And Cambridge went on a tear to end the season, winning 16 of 17 games before the playoffs started.

Cambridge is the first team to qualify for the Sutherland Cup round robin.

Chatham leads the Western Conference Final 3-2 over Leamington and the Maroons host Game 6 on Saturday.

St. Catharines leads Hamilton 3-2 in the Golden Horseshoe Final and Game 6 is Friday night in the Falcons rink.
