Bayfield Slapshot Golf Classic supports local recreation opportunites

This year's 9th annual Bayfield Slapshot Golf Classic hosted by Bayfield Arena Community Partners Association was sold out, as it has been for the past eight years.

Organizers say credit for the success of the event goes to the Bluewater and area community for supporting it the way they have.

Event Coordinator Bill Whetstone says 80 golfers took part in the event at the Bluewater Golf Course on Saturday, to raise money to subsidize programs at the Bayfield Arena and Community Centre so that everyone can play or participate.

He explains the Bayfield Arena Community Partners Association is a unique group of community members who manage and fund-raise for the facility, rather than have it managed by the municipality, so that community support is essential.

Whetstone adds the Bayfield Slapshot Classic is all about having fun and there are no prizes.

He says the winners of the highly coveted golden hockey stick this year were Shelby Lovett, Ian Gould, Becky Meriam and Dave Meriam.
