Area First Nations Protests

Members of Aamjiwnaang First Nation protested outside Sarnia courthouse Friday morning.

The demonstration coincided with Shell Canada's initial court appearance on Environment Ministry charges relating to a spill in January 2013.

Protester Ada Lockridge says they need to protect future generations.

Another protester, Vanessa Gray says the court appearance is a good start in holding Shell accountable.

Some Aamjiwnaang residents became physically ill following the spill.

The OPP warned of traffic delays at times Friday along Hwy. 21 in north Lambton.

Protest demonstrations were being held between Army Camp Rd. and Jericho Rd.

The OPP has detours in place and officers in marked cruisers are helping redirect traffic.

Another demonstration by Walpole Island First Nation was taking place in Wallaceburg at Hwy. 40 and Dufferin Ave.

A native protest as part of the so-called Shut Down Canada was also being staged west of Wallaceburg.
