MOE Investigating Mistaken Suncor Clear-Cutting

The Environment Ministry and the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority are investigating Suncor's violation of its Renewable Energy Approval for the Cedar Point Wind Project.

Santo Giorno, spokesman for the group, We're Against Industrial Turbines, says they've submitted photographs showing the clear cutting of woodlots in the Fuller Rd. and Proof Line area.

The trees were part of provincially protected wetlands.

Officials say some 3,000 sq m have been stripped of trees, including rare red bark hickory, in contravention of the certificate of approval.

The ministry's Kate Jordan says they're investigating to determine if charges are warranted.

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority is requiring that Suncor do an impact assessment and provide recommendations for restoration of the affected area.
