New concert hall at renovated Grand Bend church

While many small-town churches are closing, Huron Shores United Church in Grand Bend is expanding its reach.

After undergoing over two years of extensive renovations, the facility has reopened its doors and now doubles as a concert hall that's used by various community groups all week long.

Reverend Dr. Kate Crawford said the $2.5 million in work included accessibility upgrades, a new HVAC system, and plumbing and electrical improvements.

"We really are excited to see community partners coming in," said Crawford. "There's an adult education program that's now using our space, there's a ukulele group, there's a sewing group which comes and sets up their sewing machines and is creating dresses for kids in developing countries."

Crawford said social isolation among seniors is a serious issue in Grand Bend, and the new concert hall helps bring inclusion to the community.

"They maybe can't drive in the winter or get out and walk very far in the winter, or get out at night anymore," said Crawford. "This space brings a place where we can now run programming for all levels of the community, but in particular we want to target those who are struggling and feeling a bit lonely and need a place to connect."

The public is invited to the "The Premiere Gala" to see the upgrades on Saturday, November 24.

The special event presents "Seasons of Song" featuring Broadway music and Christmas favourites.
