A push by Sarnia's mayor for mandatory masks in indoor public spaces has received the support it needs to move forward.
Mayor Mike Bradley told Sue Storr on CHOK (103.9FM/1070AM) Thursday morning that over the last several days, there's been more demand from the public for legislation, as we advance to Stage 3 of the pandemic reopening plan.
He said a special meeting of Sarnia council will be held on Monday, July 27 at 10 a.m. to discuss and vote on the matter.
Bradley said he wanted the support of four councillors before holding a meeting, and received it from George Vandenberg, Bill Dennis, Dave Boushy, and Brian White
"I think the public is way ahead of the political people in Lambton county on this issue," said Bradley. "Even if wearing a mask reduces your exposure by 20 or 30 per cent, it can save lives. The rest of Ontario is moving in that direction substantially. I've had a number of emails from people in Lambton Shores saying they won't shop in Sarnia. They'll go to London where they feel safe."
London-Middlesex made masks mandatory in all indoor public spaces as of Saturday. Those going against the bylaw could now face a fine of up to $100,000 in the city of London.
The Sarnia mayor presented a similar motion to Lambton County Council at its last meeting on July 8.
Councillors rejected the move, opting instead to encourage those who are capable of doing so to wear a mask in indoor public facilities when physical social distancing is not possible.
