Jays Care grant awarded for Forest ball diamond upgrade

Significant upgrades are planned at the Rick Goodhand Memorial Baseball Diamond at Coultis Park in Forest.

The Forest Minor Baseball Association has received a $54,800 grant through the Jays Care Foundation 2021 Field of Dreams program.

The winning organizations were recently announced during Sportsnet's Blue Jays Central.

Association spokesman Kevin Goodhand said the money will be used to construct two covered accessible dugouts, and new fencing.

"The current dugouts and fencing in Forest are in need of repairs for the safety of the kids on the diamond," said Goodhand. "The current dugouts are concrete and they're tough to get in and out of. The new dugouts will be chain-link so we'll get lots of good air flow through them and they'll be more accessible for the players to use."

Goodhand said the Municipality of Lambton Shores is looking at doing some other field upgrades as well.

He admits the COVID pandemic has made the past year very challenging for the organization, and the grant money gives the players something to look forward to.

Goodhand is hoping for a positive sports-related announcement from Premier Doug Ford on May 20, adding they hope to have some sort of season this summer.

Forest Minor Baseball is one of 14 organizations to benefit from the Field of Dreams program. More than $1-million is being invested across Canada this year.
