Winners of Blue Coast Walleye Challenge announced

The winners of the first ever Bluewater Coast Walleye Challenge have been announced.

The event took place from June 4-13, with 75 anglers catching a total of 393 walleye.

Mike Core caught the longest fish, at 63.5 cm, while Roland Van Veldhuisen's top five walleye totalled 274.2 cm.

The derby was held virtually, with fishers uploading their photos to the Angler's Atlas "MyCatch" app.

Angler's Atlas spokesman Sean Simmons said funds raised support a great cause.

"We were able to generate $4,000 for the great conservation work that's done by Bluewater Anglers," said Simmons. "So, we're excited to be able to pass that off. They've got a great hatchery, and do a lot of great conservation work. It's a really good will event where the proceeds go toward conservation work in Sarnia-Lambton."

The "MyCatch" app also tracks real time data about catch rates and species distribution, assisting fisheries biologists in collecting data from area lakes and rivers.

Carpenters Local 1256 and Tourism Sarnia-Lambton co-sponsored the event.
