Smoke alarm credited with saving woman's life

The Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Department is once again reminding homeowners about the importance of smoke alarms.

The department, along with firefighters from Oil Springs, were called at 1:15 a.m. to a structure fire on Rokeby Line, near Gypsie Flats Road.

Chief Jay Arns said a woman was able to escape with her dog uninjured after being woken up by her smoke alarm.

"This lady was sleeping in her house when it occurred and had she not been awakened by her smoke alarm, it would have been a different outcome perhaps," said Arns.

Arns said damage to the single storey home is extensive and the fire is believed to have started in the attached garage, although the exact cause is undetermined at this time.

"Inside the shop, for sure it started in the garage and got into the roof and spread throughout the house quick, both cars are destroyed," he said.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been notified.
