Hillcrest Public School, the Rotary Club of Petrolia, Petrolia Heritage Advisory Committee, and IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter have received funding to proceed with projects submitted to Petrolia's Green Leader Program.
The Town of Petrolia and Waste Management began accepting applications in February, in order to fund projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and beautifying the area.
The town announced the successful applicants on Earth Day.
“Earth Day is the perfect day for this annual announcement as it brings community attention to the issues facing the earth and through this program, it is a nice opportunity to do our part," said Chief Administrative Officer/Treasurer Rick Charlebois. "We are very grateful for this partnership with Waste Management for the betterment of our community and for our earth.”
The school council at Hillcrest Public School received $5,000 to create five outdoor gardens and a composting station. With help from staff, the school council also plans to develop a food waste program and will use grant funding to purchase compost bins for the school.
The Rotary Club of Petrolia received $5,000 to build a shed in order to provide storage, a watering system, and a compost facility for its community garden.
The Petrolia Heritage Advisory Committee received $2,500 to help with reforestation efforts at the North Street Heritage Cemetery.
IODE Margaret Stokes Chapter received $2,500 to add a nature trail in Bridgeview Park, which would include a bench and signs along the trail to describe the history of the area.
"We would like to develop or upgrade, and dedicate a trail to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee year, running from Bridgeview Park up through the woods to end at The Petrolia Discovery," read the project summary.
The Green Leader Program launched in 2020.
