Councillor proposes free bus passes for refugees

A Sarnia councillor wants to make the city more accessible for refugees finding a new home here.

Brian White has drafted an idea to help the individuals get around easier.

"I will be bringing forward a motion to offer assistance through the city's transit system, by allowing folks to use the transit system for free for a period of time," said White.

If approved, White said staff will be doing some research first.

"My request is to ask staff to check out best practices to offer free bus passes to any visitor from Ukraine and any other refugee, from any country in fact, who may be landing in Sarnia for a safe place to live."

White said the idea was born after having conversations with host families.

"I was approached by members of the community who are hosting families from Ukraine, given the nature of the circumstances in Ukraine, they're looking for safe places to land and many folks are coming to Sarnia," he said.

White said it's a small gesture to offer a warm welcome and kindness to those who are fleeing horrible circumstances.

Sarnia council's regular meeting is being held in-person at 1 p.m. Monday.
