Sarnia council briefs

Sarnia council sided with residents in a north end neighbourhood Monday.

A request from the Lambton Kent District School Board and Chatham-Kent Administrative School Services to construct a new path along the south side of O’Dell Street from Colborne Road to King George VI School was rejected in an 8-1 recorded vote.

Councillor Brian White supported the recommendation, but when it failed he asked that the child safety issues be investigated by staff.

Council supported his call and asked that staff report back with other ideas.

A new fireworks and pyrotechnic bylaw has been approved.

Fines range from $300 to $2,000 for various offences.

Selling fireworks to a person under the age of 18 and having a pyrotechnic display at an event without requesting and ensuring a 'Fire Watch' is present carry the maximum penalty of $2,000.

Using pyrotechnics without a permit comes with a $1,000 fine and failing to remove debris and unused pyrotechnic special effect fireworks within 24 hours of an event carries a $300 fine.

The full list of fines can be found here.

It was suggested that council consider adding both Diwali and the Lunar New Year to dates allowing fireworks displays in the city.

Chief Bryan Van Gaver said he considered the request, but didn't want to exclude other cultural events.

He said applications can be made as a special event in those instances.

City staff have been sent back to the drawing board to develop City of Sarnia entrance signage.

City council didn't like the final concept designs presented Monday.

Councillor Nathan Colquhoun didn't like the slogan, 'The Place You Want To Be."

Councillor Mike Stark wanted the population eliminated from the design.

Councillor George Vandenberg said no one uses the coat of arms anymore.

Director of Economic Development Kelly Provost said the renderings presented used the city's current branding.

Staff have been directed to finalize a site plan development control agreement for 76 residential townhouses behind the Landmark Village on L’Heritage Drive.

Councillors amended the recommendation slightly. They've asked that motorists only be allowed to make right turns when leaving the Steeves and Rozema property.

Sarnia's Chief Administrative Officer has been delegated additional authority from August 19 to November 14 this year, if needed.

If it is determined that the new council will include less than three-quarters of the members of the outgoing council the municipal act prohibits councils from undertaking certain acts.

-----------------------------------------------

Transit fees will be waived on municipal election day.

Sarnia council hopes it eliminated a barrier for those wanting to participate in the 2022 vote.
