The new track at Great Lakes Secondary should be ready for use at some point this summer.
Brian McKay, the superintendent of business for the Lambton Kent District School Board, said they're just putting on the finishing touches.
"The track and the artificial turf infield is all complete. We still need to do some seeding on the small soccer field to the south of the track. Of course it's all weather dependent, and some rain -- I'm probably not the only one saying that -- some rain would really help."
The state-of-the-art, eight-lane track, will replace the one previously used by the Sarnia community near the former St. Patrick’s High School site on East Street.
Public use of the track ended last fall to make way for construction of Bluewater Health’s future helipad.
McKay talked about when the new track should be ready for use.
"We're just waiting for the contractor to take down any construction fencing and anything like that, so it hopefully should be sometime this summer that the fencing is down and that we'll have an open facility."
McKay said the new addition is great for all of the athletics at Great Lakes.
"And I think it just provides it with kind of that state-of-the-art facility to support their track program, to support any of their field events, such as their rugby team, as well as all of their physical education classes," he said. "There's just 100 per cent added flexibility with the artificial turf infield, for example, that can be used, more or less, year round."
McKay said it will also provide a great benefit to local elementary schools and the greater community, including the Sarnia Track Club.
"We really, I think, set it up to be that multi-use, multi-athletic, multi-sport facility for the school."
The cost of the project was $5.4 million.
