Rotary Club to help more community groups through grant program

The deadline to apply for community project funding through the Rotary Club of Sarnia's Action Grant is quickly approaching.

Groups wanting to make a difference in the community have until August 15 to submit an application.

"We typically get between eight and a dozen applications, sometimes as many as 15," said Spokesperson Michael John Kooy. "This is something that we run twice a year. Deadlines are January 15 and August 15. We've been doing this since last year."

A total of nearly $100,000 has been disbursed during previous rounds of funding to groups including St. Joseph's Hospice, Community Living, and the Alzheimer's Society of Sarnia-Lambton.

Kooy said the grant program is open to groups of any size, typically those who are unable to secure funding through government programs.

Eight local organizations received funding earlier this year. One of the projects involved room upgrades at The Women's Interval Home of Sarnia-Lambton.

Kooy said the Rotary Club of Sarnia doesn't presume to know where the needs are in the community so it's important for different groups to apply.

"We want to hear from people from kind of grassroots, where they think some extra dollars would make a difference," said Kooy.

Applications can be submitted via email to serviceaboveself@rotarysarnia.com. Guidelines can be found on the Rotary Club's website.

For those who are unsuccessful in securing funding, Kooy said applicants will be notified as to why and will be invited to apply again in the future.
