Grand Bend to welcome thousands for the unofficial end to summer

The final long weekend of the summer is expected to be a busy one in Grand Bend.

Thousands will flock to the Lake Huron resort community and Lambton Shores Mayor Bill Weber reminds beachgoers to keep it clean.

"When the beach is busier there is always more garbage left there and all we ask is people use the receptacles that are there," said Weber. "We try to put as many garbage cans and recycling cans out as possible and try to empty them as often as possible. It's one of those things that people need to respect the environment, they need to respect others and if you carry it in, it's great if you carry it back out and find a spot to put it in."

Motorists are also reminded to obey the rules of the road over the holiday weekend.

OPP Cst. Ed Sanchuck said so far this year, 229 people have died in 203 fatal collisions on OPP patrolled roads. He said among the fatalities were 33 motorcyclists, 17 pedestrians and nine cyclists.

Area boaters can also expect to see an increased police presence on waterways as the OPP marine unit will be ensuring boaters are in compliance with vessel regulations.

Over the Labour Day weekend last year, Lambton OPP laid about 50 charges for various offences, including 41 offences under the Liquor Licence Act.
