Events are coming to Sarnia and Chatham to help broaden the scope of potential careers for students who may be interested in "male-dominated fields."
The WE Build a Dream Career Discovery Expo will be held at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham on December 1 and at the Dante Club in Sarnia on December 6.
The events are geared toward girls and those who identify as females in Grades 7 through 12 (along with their parents or guardians).
Build a Dream is a national non-profit organization, based out of Windsor, that introduces students to careers where females are underrepresented in, such as the trades, emergency response, or STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
The expos will include a tradeshow and panel discussion led by women.
"I think one thing that's really important is just bringing an open mind and being willing to listen and communicate," said Marketing Manager Olivia Filipov. "We want to hopefully just introduce people to things that they're not familiar with or just didn't even think about. So many young women don't even think about going into these fields that women are typically underrepresented in."
Filipov said the organization works with school boards and corporate partners on this initiative.
These types of expos have been held in other cities but this is the first time the organization is bringing it to Sarnia and Chatham.
"We're doing two different events for the same school boards because it encompasses such a large space," said Filipov.
Those interested can register online up until the day of the event.
Both the Chatham and Sarnia expos will begin at 6 p.m., however, doors will open at 5 p.m. The events will run until 8 p.m. and a light dinner will be served.
