UPDATE: Dump truck driver charged following Tuesday morning crash

A dump truck driver is facing charges following a crash at a busy Sarnia intersection that sent one person to hospital Tuesday morning.

Sarnia police were called to the area of London Road and Pontiac Drive after a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and dump truck collided at around 8:30 a.m.

Police said the driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries. Sarnia News Today previously reported that the individual had been taken to hospital.

In a news release, Acting Staff Sergeant Kent Jamieson said "the intersection was closed for numerous hours because of hydraulic fluid that had leaked onto the roadway."

The intersection re-opened by mid-afternoon.

The Traffic Reconstruction Unit attended the scene to investigate.

As a result, the driver of the dump truck was charged with failing to stop at a red light, driving a heavy truck in a restricted area and disobeying a sign.

Sarnia police are thanking the "numerous citizens" who stopped to assist before officers arrived.

Jamieson said traffic concerns can now be reported online or by calling the non-emergency line at 519-344-8861.

A reminder that Exmouth Street is closed to traffic between Lambton Mall Road and Pontiac Drive to accommodate the next phase of construction of the Rapids Parkway extension.
