Sting name leaders ahead of OHL season opener

The Sarnia Sting have announced their leadership group ahead of Friday night's OHL season opener.

The team has named overage centre Cooper Way as its captain, while Marko Sikic and Easton Wainwright will serve as alternates.

Way said he's thrilled to don the "C" for the club.

“It is a true honour and privilege to be named the captain of the team for this season," said Way. "Looking forward to leading this team in front of the best fans in the league all season long."

Sting General Manager Dylan Seca said it's a well-deserved honour for all three players.

“All three men represent our organization core values and have elite character and work ethic," said Seca. "This season is more about the group as a whole but Cooper, Marko and Easton will be a part of the leadership team that will ensure we stay committed to the task at hand! We’re excited to get to work."

Way was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection by the Oshawa Generals. He was acquired by the Sting last October in a deal that send Ryder McIntyre to Oshawa.

Sikic was acquired by the Sting in January 2022 in a trade that sent Brayden Guy and Ashton Reesor to the Guelph Storm.  Wainwright was the Sting's 9th round pick in the 2021 OHL draft.

The Sting face off against the Windsor Spitfires tonight as the 30th season for the club begins with a 7:05pm puck drop at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
