Aamjiwnaang First Nation calls state of emergency over industrial benzene emissions

The Aamjiwnaang First Nation has declared a state of emergency over high levels of benzene in the air.

INEOS Styrolution notified the community of temporary elevated benzene levels on Thursday.

The Tashmoo Avenue facility reported through Sarnia-Lambton Alerts that spikes of greater than 12.5 PPB [parts per billion] may occur as it progresses through the current stages of its unit shutdown.

In a news release issued late Thursday, Chief Christopher Plain declared a local state of emergency at Aamjiwnaang due to the ongoing and excessive discharge of the chemical compound benzene.

"While declaring a Local State of Emergency is a serious measure, Aamjiwnaang is doing so in order to assist in our preparedness and ensure we have adequate resources at our disposal in the event that further action is required," read the release.
