Steps for Life Sarnia marks 15 years

This weekend's 15th annual Steps for Life Sarnia fundraising walk will still take place at Canatara Park but the route will look a little different compared to past years due to ongoing road and trail construction work.

The five-kilometre walk is scheduled to take place on Saturday. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the walk itself will start at 10 a.m.

Sarnia Steps for Life Walk Chairman Mark Roehler said participants will meet at the Area 1 Pavilion, adjacent to the accessible playground, instead of the Seaway Kiwanis Pavilion.

"We just found out too that the playground is actually under construction now as of May 1, so that will not be accessible for the kids," he said.

Signs will be placed around the park to direct participants on where to go.

Roehler said the walk will go ahead rain or shine, although Environment Canada is only calling for a small chance of showers on Saturday.

Steps for Life is the top fundraising event for Threads of Life, a national charity that raises awareness and funds for individuals and families impacted by serious workplace injuries, fatalities, or occupational diseases.

Last year, Roehler said $17,500 was raised in support of Threads of Life and there were 91 walkers. This year's goal is to have 100 participants and to raise at least $15,000.

This year's Steps for Life Sarnia spokesperson is Joshua Rene, who lost his father, Jamie Barker, in a workplace tragedy in 2000. Barker was a painter on the Ambassador Bridge when the scaffolding collapsed. His body was recovered months later from the Detroit River.

"I am [honoured] to once again be involved in Steps for Life. I have met some incredible people through Threads of Life and have been privileged to share in their journeys," said Rene in a media release.

A map of the walk route and registration details for the event can be found on the Steps for Life website.

Roehler said this year's walk will also feature a silent auction.
