Noelle's Gift adds new spin to May fundraiser

Noelle's Gift to Children is encouraging residents to go outside and get active as the weather gets warmer this month.

Their first ever "Find Your Way in May" fundraiser is underway.

The geocaching scavenger hunt is a fun spin on their popular "Count Your Ks in May" fundraiser that was held in previous years.

Noelle's Gift representatives Bryan Cowden and Cathy Robertson joined the COOL 106.3 morning show earlier this week.

Cowden said rather than just keeping track of your kilometres walked, this year's event is more interactive.

"We want you to get outside and get some fitness in, it's May and the winter blues is over," said Cowden. "Let's put a spin on it, and go find QR codes that we've hidden around Sarnia-Lambton. We've hidden 31 QR codes, one for every day in May, and we'll give you a clue every day as to where they are."

Cowden said everyone is invited to register, whether they're an individual or with a team, or a school group.

"You can go to www.noellesgift.ca and under the events section you can register," he said. "Then, you'll get an email from me with strict instructions on how it all works. We'll give you a little clue as to where they are town-wise. There are 23 in Sarnia alone and eight outside of the city. We started with clue number one on Wednesday but you can register any time."

Cowden said if you happen to miss a day, the scavenger hunt can be done at your leisure.

"They're already out there, you can get them at any time you want," he said. "We'll try and make sure the clues for the further away ones are released first so that you can plan accordingly. You'll see them all around Sarnia. When you see one, you can register any time and submit them then."

Cowden said prizes of $250 will be given to whoever finds the most QR codes, and whoever collects the most donations.

"So, you're not just finding the codes, but you're raising money as well," he said. "If you can't participate, you can always sponsor a participant."

Robertson said Noelle's Gift has raised $3.5 million since its inception in 2013.

"It is amazing, our community is so giving and so helpful," said Robertson. "We support the Ontario Student Nutrition Program. This year alone, we're going to release over $140,000 in funds to help the students in Sarnia-Lambton and Chatham-Kent. We realize that food costs are through the roof and a lot of kids rely on the food they get at school to help them in their healthy learning habits. We also support other snack pack programs with the Inn of the Good Shepherd."

Robertson said they also run an initiative called "Noelle's Closets".

"We have over 75 closets placed at schools in Sarnia-Lambton and Chatham-Kent for kids to access immediate needs, whether it be hygiene or clothing. The community, with the funds that we raise, helps to stock those closets."

"Find Your Way in May" is sponsored by Fleck Law and Carpenter's Union Local 1256.
