Grand Bend Legion eyes reopening after fire

The Grand Bend Legion is hoping to be open in a few months following a fire over a week ago.

The July 16 blaze resulted in an estimated $500,000 in damage to the recently renovated Legion hall on Municipal Drive.

As of July 17, a remediation company has been onsite starting the process of clean up and repair.

"The remediation company Belfor estimates that it will be about three months before it is entirely open," said Branch 498 President John O'Handley.

He said the Legion is looking at options to partially reopen the building.

"(This is) so the non-profit organizations can meet as well as our members can come in and socialize," O'Handley said.

The Legion now has 24 hour security on site while work is under way.

According to O'Handley, there has been concern in the community because of the difficult time the Legion had during the pandemic.

O'Handley said that the Legion will not be closed permanently.

"We will be open and active as always," he said.

He said to help with the cost of clean up and repairs the Legion has a call out to other branches.

O'Handley said their members and the community have been supportive.

"They're calling and letting us know that if they can help in any way please give them a call," he said.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
