As e-bikes gain popularity, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding riders that they're also subject to Ontario's Highway Traffic Act.
To be operated legally, all e-bikes need to be equipped with operable pedals, have a maximum speed of 32 kilometres per hour, weigh no more than 120 kilograms, have two independent braking systems, and meet all Ontario equipment standards.
Unlike motor vehicles, e-bike operators are not required to have a driver's licence, vehicle registration, licence plates, or insurance, although all riders must be at least 16-years-old and wear a helmet.
Riders should also be aware that municipalities may have additional bylaws or restrictions in place.
The OPP encourages all riders to prioritize safety, remain aware of their surroundings, and respect the rules of the road.
In Point Edward, E-bikes are prohibited on the waterfront pathway.
The OPP said this affects the pathway running along the waterfront area between the casino and the eastern portion of the park system.
If you're riding in that area, watch for posted sings and local bylaw restrictions.
