Canadian Coast Guard Volunteers Recognized

The federal government highlighted its continued investment in the Canadian Coast Guard's Auxiliary Wednesday afternoon.

Sarnia-Lambton MP Pat Davidson announced over $5-million to ensure the safety and security of mariners.

Davidson says it was nice to recognize the volunteers.

Nearly $1-million is being invested in the Central and Arctic Region's 103 auxiliary units, including Sarnia's.

Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary District 3 Director Clive Wordon says the continued support is appreciated. He says a lot of the funding is spent on training and vessel maintenance.

In Sarnia, the PointSAR unit surveys the St. Clair River and Lake Huron from Sombra to Kettle Point.

The 14 member team is on call from the beginning of April to the end of October, responding to about 25 calls each year.
