Response To VIA Petition Disappointing

The local Federal Liberal Association is disappointed with the Harper government's response to a petition calling for improved VIA Rail passenger train service.

President Eileen Viola says they were told that "today's service meets the needs of travellers" and "VIA is an independent Crown Corporation responsible for its own decisions."

Right now there's only one train in and out of Sarnia daily.

Viola says there are fears the Federal government will divest and privatize VIA Rail.

The Liberals are supporting an NDP private members' bill to improve passenger rail service so it's not always subjected to cabinet decisions.

Viola says it will be an election issue this fall.
