Legionnaires Down Stars, Take Series Lead

The Sarnia Legionnaires took a 3-2 series lead over the St. Thomas Stars with a 4-1 victory on Thursday night.

Ryan Vendramin scored eight minutes into the first to pull the Legionnaires ahead 1-0, Andrew Chambers tied the game for the Stars in the late stages of the period. Sarnia captain Nathan Mater scored on a shorthanded breakaway early in the second frame and Hayden Allen scored his first GOJHL goal six minutes later. Jordan Fogarty capped the scoring for the Legionnaires with an early third period tally.

Davis Boyer was hauled down on a shorthanded breakaway but missed his penalty shot. Ryan Trottier missed the net on a shorthanded breakaway chance of his own. It was a penalty filled game that saw Riley Babkirk, and PJ VanderVaart fight for the Sarnia Legionnaires while Dane Johnston and Josh Houston dropped the mitts for St. Thomas. VanderVaart was also handed a match penalty for head-butting.

The Legionnaires went 0-4 on the powerplay while the Stars were held off the score sheet on three chances. Sarnia out shot St. Thomas 34-23. Game six will be held Friday night at 7:30pm in St Thomas.

New military crosswalk in Sarnia to be unveiled

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
