Funding To Target Homelessness

Lambton County will receive $2.2-million for the next two years from the province.

The money is the municipalities share of $587-million to combat homelessness in Ontario, announced late last month by the provincial government.

Social Service GM Margaret Roushorne says how the money will be divided up locally has yet to be determined.

She says there will be some planning with the community to identify priorities for the money. A report is expected to go to county council within a couple of months.

Roushorne says the county was previously receiving $1.1-million annually from the province towards social service programs.

Municipalities can use the additional money for setting up emergency shelters, homelessness prevention programs, housing as well as food banks.
