Fundraiser For Local Paralympian

An 80's themed fundraiser is planned for Saturday night, with the hopes of getting local Paralympian Robert Hughes to Rio for the 2016 games.

The 30-year-old Hughes, who has cerebral palsy, began competing in 1998. At the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, he placed fifth in the men's discus and men's javelin. In 2007 he placed second in the Rio Parapan Shot Put event.

Organizer Roger Graham says the event is being held at 8pm at Rack and Roll at the corner of Christina St. and Maxwell St.

Tickets are just $10 and can be purchased at the door.

Hughes is also hoping to qualify for this summer's Para-Pan Games in Toronto.
