Grass Fires Tracked To CSX Train

Sarnia's fire chief says Michigan-based CSX railway company has claimed responsibility for a series of grass fires along the CN tracks last Thursday.

John Kingyens says the fires likely originated from hot ash or sparks from the engine of a train.

Crews from four stations extinguished five different fires from south of St. Andrew St. to south of Hwy. 40 while another station handled a fire in the rail yard. Sarnia Fire is seeking cost recovery from CSX to pay for the service.

Under Chemical Valley Emergency Coordinating Organization protocol, fire crews from Imperial and Lanxess also responded.

Kingyens says Sarnia fire will be in contact with CSX regarding improvements to engine and track maintenance and upgrades to the grass interface along the railway.
