Severe thunderstorms with the potential for tornadoes were racing across southwestern Ontario Monday night.
As of 10:14pm a tornado watch was in effect for Sarnia-Lambton and surrounding area while tornado warnings were in place for neighbouring south Huron County.
In fact, there was an unconfirmed report of a tornado southeast of Goderich.
Along with the potential for producing isolated tornadoes, the storms are capable of bringing torrential downpours, damaging winds, intense lightning and hail.
Residents were being warned of two waves of potentially severe weather Monday.
A cluster of thunderstorms moved eastwards across southern lower Michigan Monday afternoon, reaching Sarnia-Lambton in the late afternoon hours.
There was some heavy rain, wind and lightning. Hydro One was reporting some power outages, most notably one impacting nearly 700 customers in Plympton-Wyoming. There were also smaller outages in the Corunna-Mooretown and Wilkesport areas.
The first wave of storms was the result of a warm front while the second wave, with more potential for severe weather, was developing in advance of a corresponding cold front that will sweep through.
In the event of a tornado, it is recommended you take the following actions: Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
