Gallery: Extensive Damage In North End House Fire

An off duty Sarnia fire captain is credited with helping three occupants get safely out of a burning north end home last night. At about 9pm, Tom Ennett noticed smoke while driving in the Michigan Ave., Murphy Rd. area. He investigated and found a garage and home on Camelot Cres. on fire. Ennett alerted three occupants who were unaware of the blaze, got them out safely, and backed a vehicle out of the driveway to give responding firefighters clear access. Deputy Chief Bryan Van Gaver says the fire started in the detached garage, which was destroyed, and extensively damaged the back of the house. Siding on the back of a neighbouring home on Michigan Ave. was also damaged. Van Gaver says it appears the cause is accidental in nature but the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been called in to try to determine the exact cause.

Three stations responded and the fire was quickly extinguished. Van Gaver says total damage is at least $200,000. Fire officials remind residents to never leave candles or other open flames unattended. Fire destroyed a garage and damaged the rear of a home on Camelot Cres.
